Founded in 1944, Shaanxi Normal University is one of the six normal universities directly administered by the Ministry of Education of China. The campuses are situated in south of Xi'an being one of the four most famous cities for unique culture and history in the world, covering an area of over 1,300,000 square meters. The old campus is surrounded by a few historic sites, such as the Great Wild Goose Pagoda of the Tang Dynasty standing to the east, the Qujiang Lake lying to the south and the Round Mound of the Temple of Heaven. The new campus is situated at the University City of Western of China in Chang'an District of Xi'an. The garden-like landscape of the campus wins the reputation of the best environment for study and research. The University currently has over 2600 staff, over 16,100 students including 13,000 undergraduates and 2400 Master degree candidates and Doctoral candidates. It has 2 National Research Centers, 6 mobile post-doctoral research stations, 28 specialties for Doctoral degrees, 95 specialties for Master degrees. The University emphasizes on combination research and teaching, strives not only for improvement social science, humanities, art, science and engineering development but also for the promotion of interaction and mutual promotion among various subjects. It also aims to undertake the duty to cultivate high quality teachers for not only northwest of China but also whole nationwide.

The School of Chemistry and Materials Science is one of the oldest and biggest schools of the University. It currently consists of three departments including Department of Chemistry, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Materials Chemistry, and three institutes namely Analytical Science Institute, Applied Chemistry Institute, Energy Chemistry Institute, Key Laboratory of Macromolecular Science of Shaanxi Province and two research centers including Shaanxi Research Center of Historical Cultural Heritage Protection, Research Center of Modern Materials Science. Moreover, there are more than ten research laboratories including Organoanalysis Lab, Bioanalytical Chemistry Lab, Organometallic Chemistry Lab, Natural Pharmaceutical Chemistry Lab, Organic Synthesis and Biomimetic Lab, Industrial Catalysis Lab, Modern Chemistry Teaching Lab and Computational Chemistry Lab.

The School currently offers three doctoral programs of Analytical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, and Materials Science, ten postgraduate courses for Master's degree programs of Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Physics, Materials Science, Material Physics and Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering Process, Curriculum and Pedagogy for Chemistry. Master of professional degree of Education and four Bachelor's degree programs of Chemistry Education, Science Education, Applied Chemistry, and Materials Chemistry are also offered.

The School possess a strong staff team including 28 doctoral supervisors, 33 full professors, 28 associate professors, 46 academic staff with PhD and 16 academic staff who are doctoral candidates. 27 faculty members obtained his/her Doctoral degree or conducted post-doctoral research in foreign country. Presently the School has 1156 students, including 778 undergraduates, 342 master's degrees candidates and 36 doctoral candidates.

The Chemistry Education Committee of Shaanxi Chemical Society and the Secondary School Chemistry Competition Committee of Shaanxi are located in the School. The Journal of "Teaching and Learning References for Middle School Chemistry"and the"News Paper for Secondary School Physics and Chemistry" are published by school.

The 7-Storey Chemistry Building of the School at northwest in old campus has a floor area of 12,000 square meters including over 280 rooms for experiment teaching, research, administration and library. The School's library contains more than 1,800 volumes of books and 1200 journals. The amount of books and journals has been increasing at the rate of 300 volumes each year. In addition to the instruments, the University has invested more than 30 million CNY to order some state-of-the-art facilities in the School during the last five years. The Chemistry Building has been refurbished in this year and the supporting facilities have been improved significantly.

The School has always laid equal emphasis upon teaching and scientific research. The aim of School is to train students to be not only teachers in high schools, colleges and universities, but also scientific researchers and other academic professionals. The School strives to develop the students' intellectual ability, emphasize fundamental knowledge, encourage innovation, carry out teaching reform and improve teaching management level. Over the past 3 years, more than 40 textbooks of chemistry have been published by the national publishing presses including Science Press and Higher Education Press. Seven of the textbooks have been assigned by the authorities as "Textbooks Facing 21 Century". Currently, more than forty teaching research projects are being conducted in the School, which are supported by the Ministry of Education of China and our University. In addition, the School has been awarded the excellence teaching school three times (1998, 2000, 2003) by the University. Chemistry specialty of the School is awarded the excellent specialty of Shaanxi Province.
On the other hand, the School makes fully effort to improve academic research, develop inter-discipline, emphasize application research, and encourage cooperation with abroad universities and companies. Since 2000, 22 research projects are obtained from the Natural Science Foundation of China. More than 40 projects are supported by the Ministry of Education of China or the government of Shaanxi Province. In addition, more than 20 projects are sponsored by industrial enterprises. Since 2000, the School has won 7 academic awards from the local government. 183 papers are published in the Journals indexed by SCI from 2000 to 2004. The application research has also been fruitful. Eight research achievements have been transferred to industrial company, and another six have passed laboratory test and waiting for amplifying test.

We believe that our School will improve greatly in teaching and academic research and be a research-oriented school with research in new fields and interdisciplinary areas of chemistry, materials science and technology.
