Symposium Format

The symposium will last three days and consist of plenary lectures, invited lectures, oral and poster presentations. A welcome party, a banquet, a Chinese music performance, an excursion, accompanying person's programs and a post-symposium tour will be organized. A small instrument exhibition will be arranged in the poster area of the meeting site. Since most of the participants will reside on the symposium site, we expect lively discussions and a high level of scientific interaction. The official language of the symposium is English.

Call for Paper                                                                          Download the Sample Abstract

Contributed papers should be in the form of either oral or poster presentations. Participants wishing to present papers are invited to submit an abstract of no more than one page (For plenary and invited lectures, 2 pages are allowed.). The paper size of the abstract should be 21 ĄÁ 29.5 cm (A4) with a margin of 3 cm on the top and bottom and 2.5 cm on the right and left. The abstract should be formatted using "Times New Roman" font throughout, single-spaced paragraphs. Please refer the detailed format of the abstract to the "Template of the Abstract" which can be downloaded from the symposium Web site. The abstract should be submitted on-line through the symposium website or submitted as a ".doc" file by e-mail attachment to the Secretariat before June 30, 2005. The abstract book is to be distributed at the registration desk. Since abstracts will be printed as received, all authors are responsible for providing complete and accurate abstracts.

Oral and Poster Presentations

Besides the plenary lectures, invited lectures and oral presentations, participants are highly encouraged to make poster presentations during the conference. The posters will be allocated a space of 90 cm wide by 120 cm high. Poster boards will be numbered according to the same numbering scheme in the abstract book. The poster should also include title, authors, affiliation, city, country, postcode, introduction, result and conclusion.

The organizing committee reserves the right of the final decision to assign the accepted papers to either oral or poster presentations. Authors will be notified of the acceptance of their papers and will receive full instructions for each presentation, the assigned date and time, as well as other pertinent information.

Time for Presentations

40 minutes will be allocated for each plenary lecture, 25 minutes for each invited lecture and 15 minutes for each oral presentation, including five minutes for discussion. For the poster sessions, authors will be requested to be present during the assigned time for presentations and discussion.

Projection Facilities

We encourage using Microsoft PowerPoint for presentations projected with computer-aided beamer. If an alternative software is to be used, presenters would be requested to provide their own laptop and necessary software. Slide projector for 35mm slides and equipment for overhead transparencies will be also available.

Publications

All papers will be published in the Abstract Book of the Congress. 


Venue and Location

The symposium will take place in Shaanxi Normal University at its newly built facilities with numerous modern lecture halls in a very attractive campus. Xi'an is an internationally well-known historic city located in the western China and is ranked as one of the top-three tourist cities in China. Xi'an was one of the most important cradles of Chinese civilization.
The famous "Silk Road" that linked China with central Asia and the Roman Empire starts in Xi'an in the east. The city served as the first capital of a unified China and capital of 11 dynasties periodically from the 11th century BC to the early 10th century AD.

The participants can travel to Xi'an via Beijing (12 flights per day), Shanghai (6 flights per day) and Guangzhou (4 flights per day), which are connected with about 40 major cities in the world by direct flights. In addition, 2-4 direct international flights weekly from Hong Kong, Fukuoka, Seoul to Xi'an are available. The temperature in August is about 33Ąć and all the hotel and meeting rooms are air-conditioned.

Accommodation:

The local administrative committee has reserved hotel rooms in Qixia Yuan Hotel of Shaanix Normal University within a short walk from the conference venue. These rooms are guaranteed at group rates for the conference participants and are available on a first-come first-served basis. The royal garden hotel, Qujiang Hotel, about 10 min by car from the conference venue, is also available.

Payment of the On-site Registration

On-site registration as well as accommodation can be made with cash, or credit card (VISA, Master Card). Accommodation payment can be made in advance or on-site without difference in fee. However, a first-come first served policy will be applied.


Social Program

Social activities will include a welcome mixer, a poster party, and a conference banquet. There will also be a program for accompanying persons that will offer a choice of excursions and visits. A detailed description of unique and interesting things to do within the city of XiĄŻan, in the surrounding countryside, as well as a listing of restaurants and caf¨Śs in the neighborhood of the conference centre will also be available to all conference participants.

Travel information

Visas

Every foreign visitor entering China must be in possession of a valid passport. Please fill out personal information at the Web site of the Congress: http://www.pcec2005.org/onlinereg.asp and/or send the Visa Application Form (Form C) to the Secretariat before 30 April 2005. You will receive a formal invitation for your visa application from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate. Please contact the Secretariat if you encounter a problem with your visa application.

Excursion and Post-symposium Tour

Excursion

We offer the special local Xi'an tour. Pick you up from the hotel to visit the following sites including the Banpo Museum; the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum: Pit No.1, No.2, No.3, the Bronze Chariot Museum; the imperial garden of the Tang Dynasty-Huaqing Pool : the ancient remains of the bath pool, the historic site of Xi'an Incident-Five Room Hall.Then send you back to the hotel.

Post-symposium Tour

The post-symposium tour will be organized by Xi'an Travel Agency. The following routes for your selection are available.

Route 1 (west line of the local Xi'an tour)

Pick you up from the hotel at 8:30-9:00AM, and visit Xianyang Museum, Maoling Mausoleum, Prince Yide's Tomb, Qianling Mausoleum and Famen Monastery, then send you back to the hotel.

Route 2 (Guilin)

The post-symposium tour as another selection is to visit Guilin. There will be a two-day tour. Guilin is well known in China and has an incomparably beautiful landscape. The majestic peaks, the crystal-clear rivers and streams, the story-book caves and the picturesque rocks make Guilin one of the most attractive scenic spots. The participants can visit Guilin before they go to Beijing for the 40th IUPAC Congress.

General Information

Transportation

On your arrival There will be a conference booth at the Xianyang International Airport on August 7 (14:00-22:00) and August 8 (8:00-22:00). On your arrival at the airport, please look for the PCEC logo. Shuttle buses are provided for transportation from the airport to the conference site and the hotel. For those who arrive at XiĄŻan before or after the above period, please take a taxi to your hotel or conference site. Find the useful Chinese sentences at the end of this section and show it to the taxi driver. The taxi fee from the airport to Shaanxi Normal University is normally about 150 RMB (18 US$).

During the conference Transportations will be provided for all technical and social activities outside the university. For participants staying in the Qujiang Hotel, shuttle bus is available between the hotel and conference site, please pay attention to the timetable of the announcement board at the conference site (Qixia Yuan Hotel of the University). Participants staying in Qixia Yuan Hotel can also take the above bus from the university to down town area.

Conference Site

The conference site is Qixia Yuan Hotel in campus of Shaanxi Normal University. The meeting rooms are located on the second floor of the Qixia Yuan Hotel.

Conference Name Card

Each participant and accompanying person will receive upon registration a Conference Name Card. The participants are asked to bring it at all the technical and social activities. For identification, the name card will be in different color. The blue, pink and yellow one is for the scientific participants, the Organizing Committee and the accompany person, respectively.

Weather and Dress

Weather in XiĄŻan in August is hot with normal temperature about 33ºC. Please be advised to bring umbrella, hat and sun glasses. They are especially necessary for people taking the accompany personĄŻs program. Formal dress is not required for any of the functions.

Money Exchange

Money exchange is arranged at the reception desk of Qixia Yuan Hotel on August 8-9 (9:00-18:00). In other time period, the Bank of China can be reached within 10 min walking distance. Please refer to the Partial Map of Shaanxi Normal University Area.

Currency and Credit Cards

The unit of Chinese Currency is Yuan (RMB). One US dollar is equivalent to approximately 8.26 RMB. Major credit cards, including VISA, Master Card are accepted at Qujiang Hotel and some shops (but not in Qixia Yuan Hotel).

Electricity Supply

The power supply in China is 220 V, 50Hz. There are two plus available in each room Qixia Yuan Hotel, one two-hole/line and three-hole/line, the participants are encouraged to bring the necessary adapter for their electronic devices.

Water

The tap water is not for direct drinking in China. The boiled water is available in every room in the hotel.

Internet Connection

From August 8 to11, there are some computers available for the participants in the Internet Bar in Qixia Yuan Hotel. These computers have the English version of the windows systems installed. The participants can use them free of charge. Please look for the area especially reserved by PCEC (the organizer).

Long Distance Call

For the long distance call or the international call, we suggest you to buy a telephone card, which will be available in the Conference Secretariat Office. The participants can follow the English instruction to input the card number and Pin number on most public or hotel phones in order to make long distance call and international call. This way is much more economic than that making IDD directly in your hotel room. There are three types of card with different deposits: 50, 100, 200 RMB.

Fax Facility

Fax machine is available in the lobby of (Qixia Yuan Hotel), however, the user should pay for the service.

Business Hours

Typical business hours in government and private offices are from 8:30 to 17:30 (Beijing Time), and the offices are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Most shops are open from 9:00 to 19:00 or later, and open seven days a week.

Tipping

Tipping is usually not necessary in China. A 10% service charge may be added to your bill at the hotels, thus no tipping is expected unless you are provided with extra service. It is not necessary to tip a taxi driver unless he/she provides extra services.

 Accompanying PersonsĄŻ Program

The accompanying personsĄŻ program include following activities.

(1) Accompanying persons who pay the registration fee will take part in the welcome reception, banquet, Chinese music performance and excursion (the special local XiĄŻan tour to visit the Banpo Museum, the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, the Bronze Chariot Museum, the imperial garden of the Tang Dynasty-Huaqing Pool), which will be offered by the symposium organizer.

(2) In the morning of Aug. 11, the symposium organizer will arrange accompanying persons to visit Shaanxi Normal University campus free of charge.

(3) Accompanying personsĄŻ program will be arranged in Aug. 9 & 10 including the city tour. The highlights include the No.1 Gate of our ancient capital-North Gate, the ancient City Wall of Ming Dynasty, the Forest of Stone Steles Museum, the Shaanxi Provincial History Museum, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (the ancient Buddhism temple, and museum for the famous monk-Xuan Zang), Tang Paradise, the Bell Tower and Drum Tower Square, the local specialty Dumpling Dinner is served in the evening. The detailed schedule and cost will be given in June.

 Post-Symposium Tour

 Accompanying persons with conference participates will take part in the post- symposium tour, some detailed information can be found in the section of Excursion and Post-Symposium Tour (page 9/14).

 Invitation Letter for Visa

Since most participants will participate the IUPAC2005 in Beijing, the organizer will send the formal invitation letter to you as the supplemental document for obtaining the visa. The whole procedure to obtain the Chinese visa normally takes 2 to 4 weeks, depending on different countries. For those who only attend our symposium, please contact with us at your earliest convenience. We will issue the whole visa application materials for you. And we will issue the formal letter for you to obtain the visa.

Cancellation Policy

1. For cancellation of the advanced registration made before and on July 15, 2005, 100% of the paid fee after the bank commission will be refund.

2. For cancellation of the advanced registration made from July 15 to August 1, 2005, only 80% the paid fee will be refund.

3. For cancellation of the advanced registration made after August 1, 2005, only 70% the paid fee will be refund.
