Conference Overview

During August 9-11, 2005, the International Symposium on Physical Chemistry: Education and Challenges, the Satellite Meeting of 40 th IUPAC Congress (IUPAC2005) will be held in the world famous historical city, Xi'an , China. The symposium will focus on all aspects of physical chemistry and the emphasis will be laid on:

vThe discipline's scope and research areas of modern physical chemistry

vT he goals for a physical chemistry course and the core contents of lecture and laboratory curriculum

vNew developments in learning theories and classroom technology

vThe presentation methods for helping increase student knowledge and conceptual understanding

vTeaching physical chemistry in English in China

vAdvanced training of physical chemistry graduate students in addition to their thesis work

vChallenges and perspectives of physical chemistry

The symposium has received 126 abstracts contributed by authors from more than 20 countries until the deadline for the submission, June 30, 2005. The details of the submissions will be presented in several ways: plenary lectures (3), invited lectures (20), oral presentations (33), and posters (70) during the meeting. All abstracts received are relevant to the theme of this symposium, education of physical chemistry and challenges to physical chemistry . It is believed that hearty mix of teachers and researchers will ensure the exchange of ideas between the two groups that work with physical chemistry, and show recent advances in physical chemistry. And furthermore, new teaching method and technology will also show attendants how chemical concepts and pedagogy work together to create a modern image of physical chemistry while addressing fundamental topics.

We wish to thank the authors who submitted the abstracts, and our colleagues and students who helped to edit the book of abstracts. It is their contributions and helps that make this book possible. Thanks must also go to the host organizations, supporting organizations, and the people who have been helping this symposium in this way or another.

Scientific Program

Scientific Program

The symposium will last three days and consist of plenary lectures, invited lectures, oral and poster presentations. A welcome party, a banquet, a Chinese music dance performance, an excursion, accompanying person's programs and a post-symposium tour will be organized. Since most of the participants will reside on the symposium site, we expect lively discussions and a high level of scientific interaction. The official language of the symposium is English.

Poster Presentations

Besides the plenary lectures, invited lectures and oral presentations, participants are highly encouraged to make poster presentations during the conference. The posters will be allocated a space of 90 cm wide by 120 cm high. Poster boards will be numbered according to the same numbering scheme in the abstract book. The poster should also include title, authors, affiliation, city, country, postcode, introduction, result and conclusion. For the poster sessions, authors will be requested to be present during the assigned time for presentations and discussion. The organizers will provide mounting materials for posters. The poster session hold at the Meeting Room on 2 nd Floor of Qixia Yuan Hotel.

Time for Presentations

40 minutes will be allocated for each plenary lecture, 25 minutes for each invited lecture and 15 minutes for each oral presentation, including five minutes for discussion. In order to create a more active scientific interaction, please leave at least 5 min for discussion.

Projection Facilities

Each lecture room will be equipped with an overhead projector and an overhead for powerpoint presentations. In order to avoid problems and delays while switching laptops between lectures, speakers with power point presentation should copy their files onto the notebook computer in the conference office at lease half day in advance using the storage media including USB removable disk, floppy disk or CD disk.
