Dear Colleagues,

You are cordially invited to participate in the International Symposium on 'Physical Chemistry: Education and Challenges' to be held in Xi'an, China on Aug. 9-11, 2005. This is a satellite meeting of 40th IUPAC Congress (IUPAC2005) in Beijing, China on Aug. 14-19, 2005. The symposium will focus on the all aspects of physical chemistry and will specially emphasize in:

vThe discipline's scope and research areas of modern physical chemistry
vThe goals for a physical chemistry course and the core contents of lecture and laboratory curriculum.
vNew developments in learning theories and classroom technology
vThe presentation methods for helping increase student knowledge and conceptual understanding. vTeaching physical chemistry in English in China
vAdvanced training of physical chemistry graduate students in addition to their thesis work.
vChallenges and perspectives of physical chemistry

The organizers of the meeting hope to bring together chemists and university teachers for in-depth discussion on recent advances in physical chemistry and how chemical concepts and pedagogy work together to create a modern image of physical chemistry while addressing fundamental topics. The participants will share their rich teaching and research experiences for further developing in students those critical thinking skills and interdisciplinary working capability to adapt to needs of rapidly changing world. Your visit in Xi'an will provide you a good chance to look and enjoy the life in a Chinese city with mixed traditional and modern style. We are sure your visit to Xi'an will be a very pleasant and memorable one.

Symposium Format

The symposium will last three days and consist of plenary lectures, invited lectures, oral and poster presentations. A welcome party, a banquet, a Chinese music performance, an excursion, accompanying person's programs and a post-symposium tour will be organized. A small instrument exhibition will be arranged in the poster area of the meeting site. Since most of the participants will reside on the symposium site, we expect lively discussions and a high level of scientific interaction. The official language of the symposium is English.

The organizing committee invites participants to submit papers for presentation at the symposium. These papers will be refereed and accepted abstracts will be published in the abstract book.

Venue and Location

The symposium will take place in Shaanxi Normal University at its newly built facilities with numerous modern lecture halls in a very attractive campus. Xi'an is an internationally well-known historic city located in the western China and is ranked as one of the top-three tourist cities in China. Xi'an was one of the most important cradles of Chinese civilization. The famous "Silk Road" that linked China with central Asia and the Roman Empire starts in Xi'an in the east. The city served as the first capital of a unified China and capital of 11 dynasties periodically from the 13th century BC to the early 10th century AD.

The participants can travel to Xi'an via Beijing (12 flights per day), Shanghai (6 flights per day) and Guangzhou (4 flights per day), which are connected with about 40 major cities in the world by direct flights. In addition, 2-4 direct international flights weekly from Hong Kong, Fukuoka, Seoul to Xi'an are available. The temperature in August is between 20-35 ¡æ and all the hotel and meeting rooms are air-conditioned.

Accommodation:

The local administrative committee has reserved hotel rooms in Qixia Yuan Hotel of Shaanix Normal University within a short walk from the conference venue. These rooms are guaranteed at group rates for the conference participants and are available on a first-come first-served basis. The royal garden hotel, Qujiang Hotel, about 10 min by car from the conference venue, is also available.

Registered participants including students are entitled to participates in all the meeting activities and will receive the final program, one copy of the abstract book, a list of participants, a welcome reception, banquet, Chinese music performance, three lunches and coffees in all technical sessions, excursion, and arrival and departure transportation. The registration fee for accompanying persons includes a welcome reception, banquet, Chinese music performance, excursion, and arrival and departure transportation between the hotel and the airport.

Excursion and Post-symposium Tour

The excursion to Terra-cotta Warriors Museum, Shaanxi Historical Museum, and Great Wall of Xi'an will be organized in the afternoon of Aug. 11. The Accompanying Persons' Program will be organized by The Xi'an Travel Agency every day.
The post-symposium tour to Guilin will be organized by Xi'an Travel Agency. There will be a two-day (Aug.12-13) tour after the symposium. Guilin is well known in China and has an incomparably beautiful landscape. The majestic peaks, the crystal-clear rivers and streams, the story-book caves and the picturesque rocks make Guilin one of the most attractive scenic spots. The participants can visit Guilin before they go to Beijing for the 40^th IUPAC Congress.
